Characterizing Root Morphological Traits in 65 Genotypes of Foxtail Millet (Setaria italica L.) from Four Different Ecological Regions in China

چکیده

As an indispensable grain crop, foxtail millet (Setaria italica L.) is becoming a functional food in China because of its abundant nutrients. However, low rainfall and uneven precipitation limit growth production, especially northwest China. Understanding the root phenotypic characteristics critical for utilizing to breed new varieties with improved resource-use efficiency better adaptation harsh environments. The present study characterized variability morphological traits at seedling stage 65 genotypes selected from four ecological regions across seven provinces plants were assessed after 21 days germination pouches, 48 shoot measured. results showed large variation among traits. Among measured traits, dry mass, maximal length, surface area, tissue density contributed most principal components. Root area ratio volume significantly correlated length ratio, respectively, while weight negatively diameter (p < 0.01). Shoot number, total mass closely each other. 5-cm sections decreased top bottom along system. regions, early maturing had greatest density, those generally largest system, about 2.2 times more than northeast (the shortest system). genotypic correlations form basis breeding cultivars.

Fusarium Species Associated with Foxtail Millet (Setaria Italica) in Iran

Objective: Fusarium diseases that cause grain mold and stalk rot of millet are the most important diseases, of these crops in Iran. Fusarium can cause stalk rots, ear rots, and grain mold, resulting in serious production losses in millet, and produce mycotoxins that are harmful to both humans and domesticated animals.  Methods: A total of 23 Fusarium isolates were rec...

Phytolith Analysis for Differentiating between Foxtail Millet (Setaria italica) and Green Foxtail (Setaria viridis)

Foxtail millet (Setaria italica) is one of the oldest domesticated cereal crops in Eurasia, but identifying foxtail millets, especially in charred grains, and differentiating it from its wild ancestor, green foxtail (Setaria viridis), in the archaeobotanical remains, is still problematic. Phytolithic analysis provides a meaningful method for identifying this important crop. In this paper, the s...

Grain Yield and Quality of Foxtail Millet (Setaria italica L.) in Response to Tribenuron-Methyl

Foxtail millet (Setaria italica L.) is cultivated around the world for human and animal consumption. There is no suitable herbicide available for weed control in foxtail millet fields during the post-emergence stage. In this study, we investigated the effect and safety of the post-emergence herbicide tribenuron-methyl (TBM) on foxtail millet in terms of grain yield and quality using a split-plo...

Nucleotide Sequence Diversity and Linkage Disequilibrium of Four Nuclear Loci in Foxtail Millet (Setaria italica)

Foxtail millet (Setaria italica (L.) Beauv) is one of the earliest domesticated grains, which has been cultivated in northern China by 8,700 years before present (YBP) and across Eurasia by 4,000 YBP. Owing to a small genome and diploid nature, foxtail millet is a tractable model crop for studying functional genomics of millets and bioenergy grasses. In this study, we examined nucleotide sequen...
